THE WOUND IS THE PLACE WHERE THE LIGHT ENTERS YOU

MARCH 24, 2021

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”

― Rumi

There are times in our lives when pain and suffering seem to dominate our being, permeating and coloring our reality a dull grey. These times can feel eternal and hopeless, and yet most of us trudge onward and forward because some part of us knows that the hurt doesn’t last forever. Some ancient part of our psyche knows that this contrast is the marrow of life, that important substance which contains and transfers vital blood cells throughout our emotional bodies. If we can remain open to the wisdoms offered to us through our trials and tribulations, we will learn some of life’s most valuable lessons. So the next time you make a mistake and start the mental chastising, and perhaps even physical, try to remember that part of your purpose on this earth is to heal yourself and be yourself! Look at the mistake from an objective point of view through a lens of compassion. Is it possible to ascertain a lesson from the event which caused the wounding? Can you detect a pattern in your own behavior which may bring a similar scenario in again and examine it, maybe even let it go?! If you can move past the ego’s reaction to being wronged or wounded, you may just glean a golden nugget of life’s acumen.

As we learn to change our perspective on the triggers, atrocities, and personal fouls, the more we will see the glittering light all around us. The place that hurts so badly can be healed. Feeling better about ourselves and our choices, we will make even better choices and begin to embody a more positive mental outlook, which will give way to a more happy and peaceful existence. That doesn’t mean that life will be nothing but butterflies and rainbows and negative oogie-boogies will fly away forever. Rather, it means we will learn to ride the wave. The grey moments will become less and less as an appreciation for even the mundane keeps most days at least neutral beige. And then as the light begins to illuminate the darkest parts of your own self, a sort of relief will enter the furthest recesses of the mind-body-soul connection. The journey can be painful, but the beginning is usually the worst of it as your mind adjusts and upgrades old programs and patternings. As you begin to reconcile the traumatic events which created wounding, you initiate the healing process. So, yes, Rumi channeled some sort of cosmic wisdom when he so eloquently wrote that wounding can be the source of deep inner illumination. Our hurt need not shut us down, on the contrary, it has the unique capacity to open us up in a most profound and loving way.
